Thomas C. Dolan, Ph.D., FACHE, FASAE, is president emeritus of the American College of Healthcare Executives, an international professional society of more than 48,000 healthcare executives who lead hospitals, healthcare systems, and other healthcare organizations. He served as president and chief executive officer from 1991 to 2013. Before he was appointed president and CEO, he served as ACHE’s executive vice president. Before joining ACHE, he held a variety of teaching, research, and administrative positions at St. Louis University, the University of Missouri-Columbia, the University of Washington, and the University of Iowa. He also served in the U.S. Army as a field artillery officer.
Dr. Dolan received his doctorate in hospital and health administration from the University of Iowa and his bachelor’s degree from Loyola University Chicago. He is board certified in healthcare management and a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and the American Society of Association Executives. He is also a Certified Association Executive.
Dr. Dolan has served as chair of the American Society of Association Executives, Association of University Programs in Health Administration, the Association Forum of Chicagoland, the Board of Overseers of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, and the Institute for Diversity in Health Management, and as president of the International Hospital Federation. He has also served as president of the Mental Health Association in Missouri and as a member of the board of trustees of Alexian Brothers Hospital in St. Louis and Volunteers of America, Inc. Dr. Dolan is a board member of Volunteers of America National Services. He has authored numerous publications and serves as a speaker for many organizations on healthcare and association management topics.
Dr. Dolan has received the Gold Medal from the American College of Healthcare Executives, the Distinguished Service Award from the American Hospital Association, the Key Award from the American Society of Association Executives, the Samuel D. Shapiro Award from the Association Forum of Chicagoland, the Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award from The University of Iowa, the Leadership Award from the Institute for Diversity in Health Management, the Workplace Partnership for Life Association Leadership Award from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the U.S. Army Outstanding Civilian Service Medal and is a member of the U.S. Army Order of Military Medical Merit. He is also an honorary alumnus of the Army-Baylor University, Ohio State University, and St. Louis University health administration programs. The Thomas C. Dolan Scholarship at St. Louis University and the Thomas C. Dolan Executive Diversity Program at the American College of Healthcare Executives are named in his honor.
Dr. Dolan was listed annually on Modern Healthcare’s 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare list from 2002 to 2012 and is a member of its Health Care Hall of Fame.
On a personal level, he enjoys cycling, golf, photography, and travel. He and his wife, Georgia, have three children and four grandchildren.
